At least two people were killed and more than 20 injured in an airstrike on the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, regional governor Maksym Kozystskyi reported. The attack caused fires in several residential buildings, and two schools will remain closed on Wednesday, according to Lviv's mayor, Andriy Sadovy.
Explosions were also reported over Kyiv early Wednesday as Ukrainian air defenses engaged incoming Russian missiles. The Ukrainian military has placed the entire country under an air alert amid the ongoing attacks.
These latest strikes follow a devastating Russian airstrike on Poltava, which killed 51 people on Tuesday. Rescue workers continue to search for survivors in the rubble of a military institute in Poltava, where many victims had little time to reach bomb shelters.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes and vowed that those responsible would face consequences, reiterating his call for more advanced air defenses to protect Ukraine and enable it to launch its own long-range missile strikes. Moscow has yet to comment on the attacks.
